It’s the age old question which would win in a fight? An emu or an ostrich?
Here as some quick facts about both birds.
Emu
- Second largest living bird by height. (Between 4ft 11in and 6 ft 3in)
- Their stride at full gallop can be as long as 9 feet.
- Emus weigh between 40-82lbs
- They have vestigial wings about 8 inches long a small claw on the tip.
- They can run up to 30mph (48kmh)
- Their feet have three toes and claws on each toe. The toes are used in combat by kicking their opponent. Their toes and claws are about 6 inches in length.
- A group of emus is called a mob but typically they stick to pairs
- When threatened emus will charge and his or charge and kick. If it is threatened by something smaller than itself it will attempt to jump and land on the animals head.
- Won a war and showed advanced tactics against the Australian Government.
Ostrich
- Largest living bird by height. (Between 6 ft 2 in and 9 ft 2in)
- Their stride at full gallop can be between 9 ft 8 in and 16 ft 4 in.
- The common ostrich weighs between 139-320lbs
- Ostrich wingspan can reach 6 ft 7 in with a claw on the tip
- They can run at speeds up to 43 mph (70kmh) they can also run for a long time at about 34mph (55kmh)
- Their feet have two toes, the inner toe has no claw and resembles more of a hoof. The outer toe has no claw as well.
- A group of Ostriches is called a flock or a pride. Typically the travel in groups of 2-5.
- When threatened the ostrich will lie flat on the ground.
- Having no teeth ostriches swallow rocks to grind their food, a male adult ostrich can have up to 2.2lbs of rocks in their stomachs.
