Suburbs Far Away From Here | Review
London post-pop-punk rock band Suburbs released their first EP After All These Years in 2018. While there was potential it sounded like it was recorded and mixed on an iPhone. On July 12, 2019, Suburbs released their second EP Far Away From Here, and it is light years ahead of their first release.
Right out of the gate lead guitarist Richard captures your attention with a catchy hook while drummer Trent sets the pace for the song. The energy of the songs seeps through the speakers making me tap my foot. Lead singer Josh lays down some lyrics with his unique voice that demands your attention. After listening to the first track they make it clear why you should keep your eye on them.
The second track Stay starts softly with drums adding a guitar and then explodes into another high-energy song that makes your head bop and your foot tap. The emotion and pain can be felt through this song as Josh’s voice and lyrics cut deep in this emotional breakup song. It would be a great song to listen to if you just got broken up with. The pain is palatable and makes you want to reach through the speakers and ask Josh the lead singer if he’s okay.
The EP ends with a song called Growth. It’s a studio version of a song they released back in November 2018. It has become a standard at their live shows, and the studio version doesn’t do it justice. The mix sounds off as Josh’s voice comes in way louder than the instruments. The balance between them could use work. I’m a fan of this song live, they perform it well but the studio version doesn’t do it justice and leaves me wanting more out of them.
Suburbs are a band of early twenty-somethings, and it shows. It’s clear that they possess talent but are young and inexperienced. It sounds like they spent a lot of time working on the titular track, then realized they had to put it out soon so they rushed the rest of the EP. When I first listened to the EP, I enjoyed the first track. The second track I thought was good and the third needs work. Now that I’ve listened to each track five or six times, I stick by what I say. The band is promising and it is worth it to keep an eye on them as they continue to make music. I recommend listening to the EP and following them on Facebook here.
