Colony House: New Music
Colony House has released a new song with an accompanying music video which you can see below.
It’s an interesting video, giving off vibes of James Bond opening credits with references to the songs lyrics with the Impala, the opening sequence with the toy car being chased by police and then rally racing, literally cooking the books. It’s a great video with good editing, kudos to Caleb for the vision, he did an amazing job.
Now let’s talk about the sound, it’s this new wave, rock alt song. It’s got a really good sound and immediately reminded me of Cage The Elephant in the early 2010s. After listening and then reading the lyrics to the song I thought of House of Heroes album Color. If you haven’t heard it, highly recommend. It’s an album with a story, similar I think to what we hear in this song. Wether this song its part of a larger story across an album we don’t know. Either way I love it.
Let’s actually get into the song Cannonballers, which is also a line in the song. From what I can gather a cannonballer is someone who is a trained rally car driver who often speeds on the open road in defiance of authority. We can see that throughout the video and specifically in the opening sequence that I mentioned. Where a toy car is on the open road being chased by a toy police car.
The chorus is interesting to me, ” Hardtop Impala / Blank checks and cannonballers / Heard the whistle blow / From the Wabash / Can’t borrow time with the cold cash”
There’s a key thing in there that for me really points to what the song is about, and I really do love this song and it’s the line “Heard the whistle blow/from the Wabash” The Wabash is a reference to a song called “Wabash Cannonball” that originates in the 1800s.
It’s actually quite the famous country song. Roy Acuff, The Carter Family, Johnny Cash and even Bing Crosby have all done renditions. The Carter Family were first and Roy Acuff the most popular with over 10 million copies sold.
Wabash Cannonball is another song with a story and the short version is that it’s a death train. Hobos hear the call of Wabash and they know they’re on their way to paradise. It’s a great song if you want to check it out, I love Johnny Cash but I do recommend the Roy Acuff version.
I can’t claim to know what the song is about, but I do have a theory. I think that the song is about a person who has gone through life more or less as a petty criminal. They’ve lied, they’ve cheated, they’ve stolen and now they’re nearing the end of their life, they realize what they’ve done and what they could have done. It’s too late for them though. All they can do is question themselves.
That’s just my interoperation of the song, if you have a different one let me know. It’s a beautifully written song. There is one more thing we have to talk about.
I’m not sure if this was a slip up or not. But Will and Caleb’s dad Steven Curtis Chapman more or less confirmed there is a new album on the way.
In a tweet he says “My favorite rock band just released their 1st new song from their upcoming new album…and, of course, like all things @colonyhouse, I’m lovin’ it!!!”
So even if they haven’t officially announced their new album, I fully 100% believe that we will see a new album from them either really late this fall, or sometime this winter.
